If you’re the sort of person who loves going all out on Valentine’s Day AND you also love a good theme party, then this cherry vodka sour cocktail recipe is right up your alley.

It’s just like the perfect valentine for your person: Sweet, pink and a little fancy.

Not too fancy, mind you. Just fancy enough to let you know you’re special. It’s all about the egg white foam on top. Which might sound strange, but people have been mixing egg whites into cocktails for decades. And trust us—it’s amazing.

Cherry Vodka Sour Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 ½ oz maraschino cherry juice
  • ¼ tsp simple syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • ice
  • maraschino cherries and/or lemon twist for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. In a 3-piece cocktail shaker, add vodka, juices, simple syrup, egg white and ice. Place the strainer and the cap on the shaker.
  2. Holding the cap on with a firm grip, shake for about 5 seconds.
  3. Lift the lid to allow any pressure from the expanding egg foam to escape, then replace the lid and shake for 5-10 more seconds.
  4. Finally, remove the lid and strain into a cocktail glass. As the cocktail settles, the foam will rise to the top. Garnish with cherries or a lemon twist if desired.

A couple notes on egg whites

It’s worth noting that pasteurized eggs are a good choice for this cocktail, as the pasteurization process kills any harmful bacteria present inside the egg.

Also, we don’t recommend using egg whites from a carton—they don’t foam up as well. Use egg whites from fresh eggs for the best results.

Trouble with your shaker?

If your shaker doesn’t seal well, you might have a hard time getting it to froth up. Or worse—it might leak! One of our stylists recommends placing plastic wrap over the strainer before putting the shaker lid on. Works like a charm.

Try this Cherry Lemon Fizz for a non-alcoholic version

Not drinking alcohol or want to make a version for kids? Not a problem! We came up with this Cherry Lemon Fizz recipe for folks who don’t want to (or shouldn’t) imbibe.

To make it, combine:

Ingredients

  • 2 oz lemon-lime soda
  • ½ oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz maraschino cherry juice
  • ½ egg white (about 1/2 an ounce)
  • ice

Directions

  1. Add all the ingredients to a 3-piece cocktail shaker. Give it just 3-5 good shakes and immediately lift the lid to release pressure—the carbonation from the soda makes the pressure build much faster!
  2. Replace the lid and continue shaking for approximately 5 seconds, removing the lid to release pressure as needed. Strain into a cocktail glass and serve with chosen garnishes.

Why just ½ an egg white?

The combination of carbonated soda and egg white makes for a LOT of foam. It’s also why you don’t need to shake this version nearly as long.
